HP Duplexing in Windows 7

I haven’t had much of a problem with Windows 7.  But there is one little thing that has always bothered me.  The unfortunate thing is after each beta install, I forget what I did to fix it, so I’m going to write it down now.

When printing on both sides (I like to save paper), after upgrading to Windows 7 my HP LaserJet 4250 seems to have forgotten that it has a duplexer.  It only allows duplexing manually even though the printer does, in fact, have a duplexer.

It’s not THAT big of a deal, I can just re-feed the paper and print on the back side.  But why should I have to?  It should do it by itself.  So here’s how I fixed it:

Open “Devices and Printers”

duplex1

Right click on the printer to set up, and select “Printer Properties” (NOT “Properties”).

Set the “Duplex Unit” to “Installed”

And all should be well again.

Windows Live Writer and Windows 7

I love using Windows Live Writer instead of BlogEngine.net web editing.  That’s a no-brainer.  But I installed Windows 7 Beta, and Live Writer no workey.  It just crashed on startup.  Others have reported it hanging on startup.

Finally found a simple fix.  It’s pretty obvious, but I’ve had such success with Vista and Windows 7 that I had forgotten about program compatibility.

Right-click the Live Writer shortcut, Select the “Compatibility” tab, check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” checkbox, and select Windows Vista.
